If you’ve hired an agency before and felt confused about what you were getting, you’re not alone. One of the biggest complaints we hear from business owners is that they signed a contract and then had no idea what was happening.
That shouldn’t be the case. The first 90 days set the tone for the entire relationship. Here’s what that window should look like.
The first two weeks should be all about understanding. Your agency should be asking a lot of questions. About your brand, your customers, your goals, your past marketing efforts, what worked, what didn’t.
They should also be auditing what already exists. Your website, your social channels, your email platform, your analytics. This isn’t busywork. It’s the foundation for everything that comes after. If an agency skips this phase, they’re guessing.
By the end of the first month, you should have a documented strategy. Not a vague “we’re going to grow your social media” conversation. An actual plan that includes who you’re targeting, what channels you’re using, what the content pillars are, and what success metrics you’re tracking.
You should be able to look at the strategy and understand it. If it requires a translator, it’s not a good strategy.
Month two is where the work becomes visible. Content starts getting created. Social media calendars are in motion. Email sequences are being built. Design assets are in production.
You should have access to a shared project management tool where you can see everything in progress. You should be reviewing content before it goes live. And your agency should be communicating proactively, not waiting for you to ask for updates.
By month three, you should be seeing early data. What’s performing? What needs to be adjusted? Your agency should bring you a report with clear analysis, not just a spreadsheet dump.
This is also when the strategy should start evolving. A rigid plan that doesn’t respond to data isn’t a strategy. It’s a checklist. Good agencies adapt.
By the end of 90 days, you should feel clear about the direction, confident in the team, and able to see the foundation being built. You might not have blockbuster revenue results yet (that’s normal for organic marketing), but you should see momentum, clarity, and consistent execution.
If you feel confused, left in the dark, or like you’re getting the same generic work everyone else gets, something is wrong.
At Digitally Ahead, the first 90 days are designed to build trust as much as they’re designed to build marketing. We know a lot of the founders we work with have been burned before. That’s why we lead with transparency, communication, and strategy from day one.
