There’s no shortage of marketing agencies in Minneapolis. A quick search will give you pages of options. The hard part isn’t finding one. It’s finding the right one.
If you’ve been burned before, you already know this. The deck looked great. The proposal sounded smart. But the actual work? Not what you expected. Here’s what to look for the next time around so you don’t end up in the same spot.
Every agency will tell you they “do it all.” Social media, content, email, paid ads, SEO, branding. The question is: do they do all of it well? And more importantly, do they have a point of view about what your brand specifically needs?
An agency that leads with “we can do anything” is usually an agency that does everything at a surface level. You want a team that listens first, then tells you what they’d prioritize and why.
This is the question most people don’t ask, and it matters more than almost anything else. If an agency is managing 40 clients with a team of six, you’re not getting dedicated attention. You’re getting a rotation of whoever is available that week.
Ask them directly. If they won’t give you a number, that’s your answer.
If it takes them a week to respond to an email before you’ve even signed, it’s going to get worse after. The sales process is when they’re at their most attentive. If the communication is already slow or vague, that’s a preview of what working together will feel like.
“We work with small businesses” is not the same as understanding your specific customer. Your agency should be asking about your buyer’s pain points, their decision-making process, and what they care about. If the first conversation is all about tactics and deliverables without any discussion of who you’re trying to reach, they’re building from the wrong foundation.
The best agency relationships feel like an extension of your team. They know your brand inside and out. They flag things you haven’t thought of. They push back when something won’t serve your goals.
That’s the kind of partnership we build at Digitally Ahead. We’re based in the Twin Cities. We work with a limited number of founder-led brands. And we treat every client’s business like it’s our own, because that’s the only way this works.
